Big Top Birthday with Neat & Tangled and MFT

Handmade Cards
Big Top Birthday (Neat & Tangled)

It’s been a while since I’ve entered a card challenge. I saw the gorgeous colour prompts in the August 2017 colour challenge over at the Seven Hills Crafts blog and immediately went and made two cards using two out of the three prompts (the first and third). I need some more birthday cards so I brought out the Neat and Tangled Big Top Birthday and MFT Spotlight Sentiments stamp sets to create these two cards.

These are the colour prompts:

I started out with an A2 cardbase, arranging the Happy Birthday sentiment from the MFT Spotlight Sentiments stamp set on the lower third of the card. I used a MISTI as I had to stamp it multiple times using a gradient of Lawn Fawn inks in Sunflower, Wild Rose and Sugar Plum. I love that the yellow and pink, when combined, make that gorgeous orange colour. I let it dry for a couple of minutes before stamping again in VersaMark ink so I could clear heat emboss and give the shiny, raised effect.

Once the background was done, I stamped the cute little clown, her hat and the birthday cake onto some ClareFontaine 210gsm DCP paper with some Copic friendly MFT Black Licorice Hybrid Ink. I then used my copics (at least three of each shade) to colour them in. I’ve been trying to practice my Skin and Hair techniques from the Kit and Clowder Copic class and this was a great chance to try out some curly hair. I think I actually used five or six shades in the hair to get that dept of colour around the face. With just this project I ended up with Copics covering the desk! Once I’d coloured them all in, I die cut them with the coordinating dies.

I adhered the birthday cake directly to the back of the card and then popped up the clown with some 3M foam tape. The hat I had to use a mixture of Multi-Medium Matte and foam tape. A covering of Wink of Stella, a few highlights in white gel pen and some Glossy Accents on the candles, buttons, nose and balloon finishes it off!

Though I love the bright, warm colours of this card, I had to try out the cooler colour combination. I followed the same process, though I used some Distress Oxide Inks in Cracked Pistachio and Faded Jeans to stamp the gradient background sentiment.

I can’t decide which one I like best. Which is your favourite? Definitely a design that I will try out again and again!
